European nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis) are a type of earthworm frequently sold as trout bait. They are nutritious and highly appreciated by axolotls, newts, aquatic turtles, and aquatic frogs. They may be fed as a staple (1 to 2 worms daily for adult axolotls and newts) or as a supplement to a pellet diet.
Unlike their Canadian cousins, European nightcrawlers can be kept at room temperature and are easy to farm in a typical vermicompost setup (just like red wigglers, but without the bitter taste!) Thanks to their smaller size, axolotls have no trouble gulping them down… So if you hate having to cut earthworms in half, these are the right choice for you! On the other hand, if you prefer feeding your animals every other day, you should go with the larger Canadian nightcrawler.
